What is included in the box
This matters more than people expect, because "what is included" determines what you must buy immediately versus later.
Per Whisker’s product pages, every current Litter-Robot ships with: the unit itself, a power supply, a fence, a step, 5 waste drawer liners, and 1 carbon filter. The Litter-Robot 4 additionally includes a Quick Start Guide.
So your five liners and one filter take you roughly five weeks of drawer empties and one month of filtration in a one-cat home. Everything after that is a consumable purchase.
Not included on any model: litter, a ramp, a backup battery, OdorTrap packs, or a litter mat.
The five cost categories
A Litter-Robot’s total cost has five parts. Only the first one is visible on the product page.

The two rows people forget are filters and OdorTrap. Neither is required for the machine to function — Whisker states plainly that the carbon filter is "not required for Litter-Robot to function" — but both are recurring if you use them.

Before modeling five years, it is worth seeing the per-unit price, because bulk pricing changes the answer significantly.

Whisker recommends replacing a pack every two weeks — 26 packs per year, or $130 over five years. At 12-pack pricing that is $541.67; at 3-pack pricing it is $650. OdorTrap is the largest optional consumable in the stack and the easiest one to skip and add later.

Here is the core model. Two scenarios per model: a lean configuration (machine, liners at 50-pack pricing, filters on autoship, no optional accessories) and a loaded configuration (machine, 3-year extended warranty, liners, filters at retail pricing, OdorTrap at 12-pack pricing, and a backup battery).
Liner usage is modeled on Whisker’s own guidance: for two average-sized cats, empty the drawer twice per week; for a single cat, once per week. That is 52 liners per year for one cat and 104 for two.

Two findings worth stating plainly. First, the Litter-Robot EVO is $200 cheaper up front and stays the cheapest option over five years — the gap does not close, it widens slightly because there is less hardware to maintain. Second, the Litter-Robot 5 Pro’s camera costs $500 more than the base 5 over five years once you include the mandatory Whisker+ membership for visual cat identification; the base machine gap is only $100.
That said, the Pro is worth it in one specific case: two cats whose weights are close enough that the weight scale cannot distinguish them. Otherwise the subscription is doing most of the work.

The litter line item
Litter is the variable that moves your total most, and it is the one number no manufacturer publishes as an annual figure.
What we can verify: Whisker sells GreatLitter at $30 for 20 lbs ($1.50/lb) and $50 for 40 lbs ($1.25/lb). Whisker’s LitterHopper FAQ states that approximately 17 lbs of standard clay-clumping litter fills both the Litter-Robot 4 globe and the hopper together, which means a full change costs about $21–$26 at those prices.
What we cannot verify: how many pounds per month a typical household consumes. Whisker does not publish a litter consumption rate for Litter-Robot models, and consumption depends on how much your cat kicks out, how deep you maintain the bed, and whether you run a LitterHopper.

If you add 10 lbs per month at 40 lb pricing, your Litter-Robot 5 one-cat lean total rises from $1,176 to $1,926 over five years. Litter can be as large a line item as the liners and filters combined, which is why it deserves its own model rather than a footnote.
You do not have to buy GreatLitter. Whisker’s support documentation states the Litter-Robot works with almost any clumping or scoopable litter and does not require proprietary consumables — though it explicitly warns against strictly absorbent, non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper-based, or wood-based pellet litter. Bags of standard clay clumping litter from grocery and pet retailers are typically cheaper per pound than GreatLitter. Two sourcing notes. The LitterHopper is only compatible with the Litter-Robot 4 — not the 5, 5 Pro, or EVO — and it carries a 1-year warranty regardless of your robot’s warranty status, but it is explicitly not eligible for the 3-year extended warranty. The backup battery works on the 4, 5, 5 Pro, and EVO, and Whisker rates it at 24–48 hours of reserve power based on 10 cleaning cycles per day.

Where the hidden costs are
Replacement parts are not published as a price list. Whisker does not publish standalone pricing for the globe, motor, or sensor assemblies on its public product pages. If a component fails outside warranty, you are contacting support for a quote rather than budgeting from a list. That is a genuine gap in the cost model, and it is the biggest single unknown in a five-year projection.

Extended warranty coverage is narrower than it sounds. The 3-year extended warranty costs $100 at checkout. The LitterHopper explicitly does not qualify for that coverage. If your reason for buying the extended warranty is accessory protection, check what is actually covered first.
Consumables do not transfer between generations — but they mostly do. Waste Drawer Liners and the Backup Battery fit every current model. Carbon filters fit the 4, 5, 5 Pro, and EVO but not the discontinued 3. OdorTrap packs work on any Litter-Robot or a standard box. If you upgrade from a 4 to a 5, you will not strand your consumable stockpile. That is unusual in this category and worth knowing before you compare brands. Support and repair downtime has a cost that is not on any spreadsheet. If your machine needs service, you are back to scooping. Subscription creep. Whisker+ is optional on every model at $7.99/month or $79.90/year — but if you buy a Litter-Robot 5 Pro for visual cat identification, it is effectively mandatory, because that feature requires the membership. Over five years that is $399.50 on top of an $899 machine.

Our value pick for a typical two-cat home is the Litter-Robot 5 at $799: about $1,358 over five years in a lean configuration, or $272 per year. You pay $59/year more than the EVO path over five years and get support for up to 5 cats instead of 2, a 30 lb weight ceiling instead of 19 lbs, and a 10-day drawer interval instead of 7.
Buy the Litter-Robot 4 at $699 if you want the LitterHopper. At $828 for machine plus hopper, and $1,417 over five years for two cats, it is the only way to get automatic litter refilling in the current lineup.
Skip the Litter-Robot 5 Pro unless you specifically need camera-based cat identification. It is the only model where a recurring subscription is effectively required to unlock the feature you paid extra for, and that pushes the five-year cost toward $2,500 for two cats.
