How to choose an automatic litter box
Four specs decide almost everything. Everything else is marketing.
Cat count per unit. This is the spec most buyers get wrong. An automatic box is not a substitute for the "one box per cat plus one" rule unless the maker explicitly rates it for your household size. Whisker rates the Litter-Robot 5 for up to 5 cats and the EVO for up to 2. CATLINK rates the Scooper Open-X single-cat version separately from its multi-cat version. If you have 3 cats, a box rated for 1 is the wrong purchase.
Waste drawer interval. This is how long you go between emptying. It is measured for a single cat in almost every case, so halve it for two cats and expect roughly a third of the published number for three. Litter-Robot publishes the clearest figures: 10 days (Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro), 8 days (Litter-Robot 4), 7 days (EVO) — all for one cat.
Weight range. Machines weigh your cat to detect entry. If your cat is at the bottom of the range, the sensor may not trigger reliably. Litter-Robot EVO is rated 3–19 lbs. PETKIT rates the Purobot Max 3 at 3.3–22 lbs. CATLINK rates its Scooper line at 3.3 lbs to 22 lbs. If you have a very light cat or a kitten under about 6 months, no machine on this list is a hands-off solution — you have to supervise.

Whisker Litter-Robot 5 — $799
Whisker’s current flagship for households without a camera requirement. Published specs: 22" x 27" footprint, 29.9" exterior height, 15.75" globe opening, 17.5" interior headroom, 28.7 lbs empty. Rated for up to 5 cats at 3–30 lbs.
Its differentiating feature is WasteID, which Whisker says distinguishes urine from feces so the unit can delay cycling for urine (letting clumps form) and cycle quickly for solid waste. The Litter-Robot 5 self-reports 92/100 across 241 reviews on the manufacturer’s own site — a small review base, because the model is new. That is a manufacturer-hosted aggregate, so treat it as directional, not independent.
The LitterHopper autofill accessory is listed as "coming soon" for the 5 and 5 Pro, so if hands-free litter refilling matters to you today, the 4 is the only Litter-Robot that currently supports it.
Our pick here: the Litter-Robot 5 ($799), if the WasteID sensor set is what you are after — and you can live without the LitterHopper until Whisker ships it.
Whisker Litter-Robot 5 Pro — $899
Same body as the 5, plus two integrated 1080p night-vision cameras: one forward-facing, one aimed at the litter bed. Visual cat identification and unlimited video streaming require a Whisker+ membership, which is priced at $7.99/month or $79.90/year after a 30-day free trial. Without the membership you can still stream live video for up to 5 minutes per day, and weight-based cat identification stays free.
Empty weight is 29.6 lbs. Whisker rates it 3–30 lbs and up to 5 cats. Its manufacturer-hosted rating is 88/100 across 289 reviews.

Whisker Litter-Robot 4 — $699
The previous generation, and still the model with the deepest track record. The manufacturer-hosted aggregate is 89/100 across 14,093 reviews — roughly 50 times the review volume of the Litter-Robot 5. Specs: 22" x 27" footprint, 29.5" height, 24 lbs empty, rated for up to 4 cats at 3–25 lbs, up to 8 days between drawer empties for one cat.
The 4 is the only current Litter-Robot with a shipping LitterHopper ($129). It requires a $30 Carpet Tray add-on if you place it on carpet, where the newer models have a tray built in. Bezels add $35. A 3-year extended warranty is a $100 option at checkout on all current models.
Whisker Litter-Robot EVO — $599
The compact option: 20.6" x 24.3" footprint, 27.6" height, 21.5 lbs empty, and Whisker says it is 25% smaller than the Litter-Robot 5. Rated for up to 2 cats at 3–19 lbs, with up to 7 days between empties for one cat. No WasteID, no camera. Its manufacturer-hosted aggregate is 94/100 across just 23 reviews, which is too small a sample to read anything into.
For a single cat in an apartment, this is the lowest-risk entry into the ecosystem. Note that Litter-Robot 3 Connect, long the value pick at $549, is now discontinued; Whisker points buyers to the EVO instead.
PETKIT Purobot Max 3 — $399.99 (listed from $499.99)
PETKIT’s third-generation rollout is the strongest price-to-capability ratio in this group. Published specs: 24.4 × 21.2 × 21.7 in, entrance height 8.03 in, 22 lbs, 76L cylinder, 7L side waste bin rated for up to 15 days with one cat, 12V 2A / 24W input, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, 12-sensor xSecure safety system, cat weight 3.3–22 lbs.
One caveat worth flagging: PETKIT’s own product page states 35dB operation in the marketing copy and 45dB in the FAQ on the same page. We cannot reconcile those two numbers, so treat the noise claim as unverified.
The Max 3 takes standard clumping litter — PETKIT says 99% of clumping litters, including clay, tofu, corn, and bentonite. It does not require proprietary bags.
PETKIT Purobot Ultra — $799.99 (listed from $899.99)
PETKIT’s camera flagship adds auto waste packing and auto bagging, a 10L bin rated for up to 20 days with one cat, and a 1080p camera with a 210° field of view. The camera can recognize up to 15 cats and PETKIT markets stool-consistency analysis and yowling detection.
The trade-off is real: auto-packing only works with PETKIT’s proprietary refill rings, which are $35.99 for a 3-pack, and PETKIT states one ring packs roughly 10 times. Auto-packing also has to be started manually at the unit — PETKIT’s FAQ confirms you cannot trigger it from the app, and you must remove the sealed bag yourself. That is less "hands-free" than the marketing implies.
Also note PETKIT says the Ultra cannot be placed on carpet.
PETKIT Purobot Max Pro 2 — $549.99
The mid-tier PETKIT option for multi-cat homes, built around an AI camera plus weight sensors and facial recognition for individual cat tracking. The most feature-dense box under $650 on paper. Petlibro’s published claims: a fan-driven carbon deodorizer that traps 97% of odors (based on a 6-hour third-party lab test), waste storage for up to 7 days with 2 cats, four safety checks (weight, visual, infrared motion, anti-pinch), recognition of up to 10 cats, AI analysis of urine vs. stool, and live streaming.
Two important qualifications straight from the product data. First, AI analysis, event recording, and historical playback require a Video Cloud AI subscription — live streaming alone does not. Plans run $95.99/year (Standard), $135.99/year (Premium), and $159.99/year (Premium Family) at current listed pricing. Second, Luma is rated for adult cats from 2.2 lbs to 22 lbs, and Petlibro instructs buyers to disable auto-cleaning for kittens under 6 months and use manual mode.

What the spec sheets do not tell you
Three gaps you should expect to encounter.
Acclimation is not guaranteed. Whisker states "prior models show over 95% of cats acclimate easily to Litter-Robot," which is a manufacturer assertion about prior models, not a measured rate for current ones. Budget for a transition period regardless of brand, and keep your old box available. Some cats never accept an automatic box.
Review aggregates on manufacturer sites are not independent. Every rating in this article comes from the vendor’s own product page, and Whisker explicitly notes that its reviews may include reviews placed on other Whisker properties. Litter-Robot 4’s 14,093-review base is meaningful evidence of a long production run. Litter-Robot EVO’s 23 reviews are not.
Noise and odor claims are hard to compare. Only PETKIT publishes a decibel figure, and its own page contradicts itself. Odor claims are similarly unstandardized: PETKIT claims 98% ammonia neutralization by the N50 module, Petlibro claims 97% odor trapping in a 6-hour lab test, and neither methodology is published.
